We delighted to say that the Sony British Asian Sports Awards, held at the Grosvenor Hotel on London’s Park Lane couldn’t have gone better for Leicester Kickboxing, with both Jag and Barinder going home holding prestigious awards.
Jag won the Coach of the Year award, whilst Barinder was acknowledged for the outstanding achievement of 2008 by a British Asian sportsman – despite being pitted against a member of the 2008 British Olympic team.
It was a brilliant night for all of us and well done to Jag and Barinder for their achievements. For people involved in kickboxing to win prestigious awards like these is great for our sport and is helping to get it the publicity it deserves.
The award comes hot on the heels of Barinder being recognised as ISKA UK’s Fighter of the Year for 2008 – beating World Champions Tommy McCafferty and Marty Cox Jnr.

Well, it’s been a breathtaking weekend, but hard as it may sound, the Leicester Show exceeded all our expectations.
In an absolutely stunning main event in front of a packed Starlite that has already been labelled one of the greatest kickboxing fights of all time, our own Barinder Singh triumphed with a ninth round knockout of European Champion Shawn Burton to unite that title with the Commonwealth and European titles he already held.
A tense roller-coaster ride of a contest saw the Killa Bee knock down and nearly finish Burton in the second round, before being himself dropped in the third as he closed for the kill. After weathering an onslaught from a rejuvenated opponent, a sublime change of tactics edged Barinder into a points lead, before flooring Burton again mid way through the ninth round with a blistering right hand. With his rival rocked, the Leicester fighter quickly finished the job with a final knockdown from which the Lincoln star couldn’t make the count.
The night ended in electrifying scenes as an ecstatic crowd literally invaded the ring in celebration.
It all topped off a near-perfect night for the club. Karlbir Singh (Flexi) took the English title by destroying his opponent for a knock-out in less than a minute. His brother, Harjinder Singh (Smiler), also won the English belt in his weight division by beating highly-rated Mel Dunthorne on a points decision.
It was heartbreak for Al Osta, however, who narrowly lost on points to British Champion Andy Pollard following an epic seven-round contest.
Also on the bill, Shaun Law somehow managed to absorb three rounds of constant punishment from our own Ian Jarrams, who eventually took the contest comfortably on points. New boy Norman Smith also notched up a comprehensive points win over the experienced Michael Guinness.
The knockout form continued as Justin Crowson and Maceij Lee wrapped up their contests early by stopping their opponents in the third and first round respectively.
Returning to action after lay-offs from the ring, Dan Cashmore and Kellie Murray notched up comfortable points victories.
A big thankyou to all who came to the show and made the atmosphere so excellent. We all had a great time, and hope you all loved the show as much as we did. For those who missed it, the DVD will be available shortly. Contact Jag or visit www.sinvision.co.uk
Leicester Kickboxing’s annual show returns at city-centre venue, Starlite 2001 on Wharf Street on Sunday June 15th 2008. As ever, the show looks set to be a sell-out, so make sure you get you ticket early to avoid disappointment.
Heading the bill will be the long-awaited Superfight between our own Barinder Singh and Lincoln’s Shawn Burton. Barinder holds the ISKA Commonwealth Title, whilst his rival Burton holds the ISKA European Title. The winner of the 10-round bout will take both titles and all the glory!
Also featuring on the show is Al Osta looking to settle a score with Stevenage’s Andy Pollard in a re-match for the ISKA British Title which Pollard took from Osta is a highly disputed points decision in February. Al is confident he will be setting the record straight.
Brothers Karlbir and Harjinder Singh who ruled the junior circuit for years step up to the plate for their long-awaited shots at major pro titles – both fighting for the ISKA English Titles in their respective weight categories. They’re hoping to make it a quartet of title victories for the city.
On a quality packed undercard, local favourites Graham Smith, Ian Jarrams, Justin Crowson, Norman Smith, Danny Byrne and Maceij Lee are looking to extend their recent successful runs, whilst there’s a return to action for Dan Cashmore and Kelly Murray after absences from the ring.

New Baby Makes it Third Time ‘Lucky’ for Leicester Fighter
Leicester Kickboxing Club is celebrating this week after its top fighter made it third time lucky, not by taking the British title as was hoped but by becoming a father for the second time.
37-year old Graham Smith from Thorpe Astley was looking forward to his third and final chance to become the ISKA British Middle Weight Champion but on the afternoon of the fight, his wife Michelle went into labour.
With the imminent arrival of baby Thomas, hopes of taking the title from Rotherham’s David Lockwood at the Matlock competition were dashed as Graham, who plans to retire at the end of the year, rushed to Leicester’s Royal Infirmary to be at Michelle’s side.
Ranked second in the country in the ISKA middle weight class, this was to be Graham’s third run in with his rival. The previous two attempts were also fraught with mishap. Graham explained, “The first time I tried for the title, I broke my hand and in the second the doctor called the match off after I sustained a deep wound to my forehead, so really it was third time unlucky when our baby decided it was time to come into the world on the night of the re-match!”
Jagtar Johal, of Leicester Kickboxing Club added, “They say bad luck comes in threes, only in this case, the third time had a silver lining. We are all so pleased for Graham and Michelle and although it’s disappointing that he didn’t manage to fight, he has something much more rewarding with a beautiful new son, just in time for Christmas.

Stevenage Success for Leicester Fighters
The Club enjoyed a spectacular night of success on September 29th in Stevenage. Four fighters from our gym competed, resulting in four wins – three by way of knock-out.
Harjinder Singh stepped up a level to comprehensively out-class the highly rated Mel Dunthorpe with a comfortable points decision, whilst Justin Crowson absorbed first-round pressure from home-town boy Tom Herbert before ending the fight in the second round, knocking out the Stevenage heavyweight with a flurry of combinations.
The gym’s own warrior, Graham Smith became one of the few fighters to ever knock his opponent out twice in the same fight as a first round stoppage was, for reasons unknown, not counted. After Luton’s Barry Hazel was given time to recover, Graham removed any doubt by knocking him out again in round two. A comprehensive performance.
Finally, Al Osta made a fantastic debut for the club by destroying the highly-rated Gordon Childs with ablistering first-round KO.
